Poultry
The role of dietary ‘functional’ ingredients in the prevention of intestinal health problems and in optimizing performance in poultry is becoming increasingly obvious.
Prebiotics boost digestion in a natural way
Inulin and oligofructose (also called FOS or Fructo-Oligosaccharides) obtained from chicory are prebiotic oligosaccharides which are fermented in the large intestine of poultry. The basic idea is that, after ingestion by the animal, these naturally occurring sugars are bound in such a way that animals cannot digest them.
However, these prebiotics are the preferred food for lactobacilli and can improve the balance of friendly bacteria in the intestine.
In broilers, this is particularly beneficial in young chicks having unstable micro-flora and immature digestive systems.
Adding inulin and oligofructose in layers to poultry diets improves mineral absorption, resulting in such benefits as improved egg shell strength and lower mortality rates.
Carbohydrates and protein: the building blocks for healthy growth
As young birds have immature digestion, highly digestible carbohydrate and protein sources are preferred in their diets. Rice flour (Remyflo) and rice protein (Remypro) provide superior digestibility of energy and amino acids, no allergenicity and stimulate digestion. Wheat gluten (BeneoProw W) is another highly digestible protein source for young birds and can be used to replace part of the soybean protein, which has lower digestibility.
