BeneoCarb S

Introduction
Energy supply is often limiting for highly producing animal categories. Poor utilisation of energy sources and limited feed intake are a well known problem in various animals. BeneoCarb S is in that sense a new revolutionary source of energy which combines three unique properties:
- A concentrated sugar syrup
- A sweet honey-like taste
- Slow energy release
A concentrated sugar syrup
BeneoCarb S contains 100% carbohydrates on dry matter (dm) base. These sugars are simple mono and disaccharides which are completely digested in the small intestine. All components in the sugar syrup are completely split into monosaccharides which are a direct energy source for animals. In contrast to fat or protein, these components are readily used as an energy source and do not require energy demanding conversions.
Sweet honey-like taste
BeneoCarb S is an excellent palatant and is well appreciated by a large number of species. PalatinoseTM and trehalulose, two major components of the syrup are naturally present in honey. The natural sweet, honey-like taste can even stimulate animals to further increase their feed intake. For various animal categories for which feed intake is limiting, the sweet taste may enhance appetite and consequently improve performances. BeneoCarb S is also ideal to stimulate the intake of diets containing less palatable ingredients. Especially bitter aftertaste can be strongly reduced using this syrup.
Slow energy release
In modern animal production, there are numerous animal categories which suffer from metabolic disorders in one or more stages of live. In case of elevated levels of glucose in the blood, this will lead to reduced zootechnical performances and an impaired hormonal balance.
BeneoCarb S contains specific sugars (trehalulose and PalatinoseTM) which are more slowly digested than sucrose, fructose or glucose (table 1). This slow digestion is due to a slight modification in the sucrose structure, which refers to different functional characteristics (figure 1). The slow digestion and consequently slower release of glucose reduces the post-prandial glucose peaks. This reduces the risk for diabetes mellitus and related problems. As the glucose peak determines the hunger feeling and satiation, the reduction of the peak may also stimulate feed intake. Studies have shown prolonged glucose levels up to 2 hours after feeding. Despite the reduced digestion rate, the sugars are completely digested in the small intestine and yield the same caloric value as sucrose (figure 2).

Application
BeneoCarb S can be used for all animals to promote feed intake. It is of high interest for lactating sows, veal calves and piglets. It can also be used as a source of energy for dairy cows. Also for horses, BeneoCarb S can serve as a low glycemic, high caloric ingredient. In petfood, BeneoCarb S can be used as a palatability factor and as a source of reducing sugars for Maillard reactions.
BeneoCarb S can be used at inclusion rates from 2,5% up to 5% in complete diets.
Conclusion
High performances in modern animal production demand ingredients which are in line with the specific requirements of these animals. BeneoCarb S is the ideal sweet energetic and functional carbohydrate source.
