Pigs

Productivity in sow rearing and finishing farms has soared over the past decade. The modern farm needs outstanding reproductive capacity and high growth rates with superb carcass characteristics in order to make pig rearing profitable. This can be attained not only through excellent genetics and optimal housing but also requires a well-balanced nutrition.

With its specific feed ingredients BENEO-Animal Nutrition aims to help reach these objectives and deliver best-possible nutrition for best-possible performance.

Prebiotics

Inulin obtained from chicory is a widely recognized prebiotic and is a valuable alternative to AMGPs. The functional carbohydrate inulin cannot be broken down by the enzymatic digestive system but can be fermented in the intestine by only a small number of bacteria. Feeding inulin stimulates the growth of beneficial bacteria and thereby limits the development of pathogens in the intestine. The health and general functioning of the intestinal tract are thus improved. Especially for young piglets, inulin can help to establish a balanced micro flora and limit digestive problems during weaning.

Weaning a healthy piglet

The number of piglets born per sow has increased considerably over the past decade. Despite the high number of piglets, the birth weight has remained virtually unchanged. This implies that many small piglets are born which are underweight. Mortality is too high.

Thanks to our unique ingredients and our nutritional expertise we are able to stimulate energy intake and enhance intestinal health in order to wean the piglets under the best conditions possible. Our chicory-based prebiotics stimulate intestinal health and help the young piglet to develop a balanced micro flora.

We also have a number of energy sources which are both readily digestible and palatable and stimulate energy intake during the difficult post-weaning period. Rice flour is an excellent energy source for piglets. The high starch digestibility, the absence of antinutritional factors and the  anti-diarrhoea effect of rice make it the ideal ingredient for young animals.

BeneoCarb S is a sweet, honey-like sugar syrup that the young piglets greatly appreciate. This syrup ensures a high feed intake and a delicious taste for your starter.

To conclude, with BeneoProW and RemyPro N70 we have two concentrated protein sources in our portfolio which provide the young animal with all the amino-acids it requires.

Keeping growing pigs calm and boar-taint-free

Innofiber is a highly specific blend of soluble and insoluble fiber. It has an enormous swelling capacity and is therefore the ideal fiber source to increase satiety and reduce cannibalism in growing and finishing pigs.

Chicory and products derived from chicory are widely known for of their reducing effect on boar-taint in uncastrated finishing males. Inclusion of inulin or other chicory derivatives in the feed during two weeks before slaughter leads to significant reduction of boar-taint.

Limiting feed intake in gestating sows

For gestating sows it is important to control feed intake during gestation to limit excessive fat deposition. For welfare reasons, hunger should be avoided. Fibrous ingredients are therefore used to bulk the feed. Innofiber is a good source of fiber with optimum swelling properties. This increases satiety and stimulates intestinal transit, reducing constipation during farrowing. Because of the bulking effect of Innofiber, intestinal volume is also increased, leading to higher feed intake capacity during lactation.

The prebiotic functioning of the residual inulin also stimulates the intestinal health of the sow.

Stimulation of energy intake of the lactating sow

Energy intake is of the greatest importance for lactating sows and for young piglets. The sow is in a negative energy balance during lactation and loses weight. Providing a highly palatable energy source such as BeneoCarb S can limit the negative effects of this negative energy balance. This also stimulates milk production and results in heavier piglets after weaning.
